B-Day
1) Viking Press is beginning! If you are interested in the school newspaper, then join
Ms. Timpf in room #1 for an informational meeting on October 9th from 3pm-4pm.
2) The first meeting of the Students Council will be on Wednesday, October 10 at 3:00
In room 20.
3) Please return all CEP survey’s to the Main Office as soon as possible. This survey will
assist the district in compiling data essential to receiving other State and Federal
Funding for students.
4) Due to a scheduling conflict, the meeting with PTA Council President Nofila Haidar
is rescheduled for October 10th at 7pm. Parents are encouraged to attend.
5) Dentists-R-Us will be at Smith School on October 10th. Permission slips are still
available. Turn in your permission slip today!
6) Penny Wars for Pizza! From 10/1 – 10/31, there will be a Penny War between the 6th,
7th & 8th grade students. Students and staff can donate pennies to their grade collection bucket located in the main office. The grade with the most pennies wins a pizza party! Contact Liz Courtesis for additional information at lcourtesis@gmail.com or 313-815-7488.
7) Half Day on Friday, October 12th. Dismissal at 11:05am.
8) Dearborn Public Schools is encouraging students and parents to celebrate
the 22nd annual Walk to School Day on Oct. 10th by leaving their vehicles at
home and walking to school.
9) Attention Basketball Players: The Dearborn Basketball Association is starting up soon
with a weekly practice and contests to be played here at O.L. Smith. There are boys and
girls divisions for players in grades 3 thru 8. The deadline to sign up for the Dearborn Basketball Association program is November 1st. See your Phys Ed teacher for an informational flyer if you are interested.
10) The 7th Annual Robert Cipriano Memorial Cross Country Run will be held on Monday,
October 15th at Ford Field Park in Dearborn. The two-mile run for middle schoolers will start at 4:00 for girls, and 4:25 for boys. There is a $3 charge and a permission slip must be turned in. If you are interested in participating, please see your Physical Education teacher for an entrance form no later than October 5th.
11) NJHS Applications are available in the Counseling Department from
Dr. Elder. Students wishing to apply should have a minimum of 3.0 GPA, be
in the 7th or 8th grade, and be a student in good standing. Any student
meeting this criteria may apply. Packets are available on the Smith website
or can be picked up outside the Counseling office.
Application Deadline – Thurs., October 11th by 3:00pm
Acceptance letters – Delivered by week of October 15th
Induction Ceremony – Thurs., October 25th at 6:00pm Atrium & Auditorium
