Tardy Notices Distributed

At OL Smith Middle School we guard instructional time passionately. Every minute in a class is an investment in raising a student’s achievement. This is why we firmly enforce our tardy policy; we are committed to high levels of learning for all of our students. Since implementation of the policy in 2017, tardiness has been reduced by 25%.

If a student is tardy a total (among all classes) of 8 times or more throughout the semester, that student will receive disciplinary consequences. This year, our students have had a grace-period the first 2 weeks of school to get acclimated to the schedule. As of September 9th, we have begun counting tardies.

Each Friday the report is run. Students that are in the excessive tardy range are given a tardy notice 1st period by a restorative team member the following Monday. The team member discusses the tardiness with each student and explains the consequence (detention, community service) to the student. This includes date and time to serve. After the conversation has ended, the student signs a delivery sheet as an acknowledgment of receipt and understanding of next steps. If your child has received a tardy notice, they will be bringing a blue or yellow tardy letter detailing the number of tardies, consequence, and date/time that the consequence will be served.
