O.L. Smith Middle School

Update

October 11, 2019

Greetings Smith Community,

As we close out the week I would like to provide a brief update on two events that occurred at our school. I understand there has been discussion about these events in the community and many times the details can become distorted, not intentionally, but rather due to the accounts of these events being described from different perspectives. It is our job to collect the facts from all parties involved in hopes of providing a more complete picture of what occurred. In addition, please understand that although I will share as much information as possible, as a public school we are legally responsible for maintaining the privacy of students.

On Thursday, an incident occured between two students that started with an accidental bump due to one of the students running in the hall.  Unfortunately, the students continued their exchange of words and eventually there was a brief physical exchange.

My staff and I spoke with the students involved as well as other students who were in the area to determine the details of this event. I was also contacted after the event occurred by one of the students involved expressing their remorse for what they had done.  We will address this situation with all parties involved and respond with the appropriate actions. Our goal is to always work toward a solution that will restore a safe school environment for all students and to repair the harm caused.  Both families have been gracious enough to resolve this issue in a restorative manner and that is what we are working toward.

The other incident occurred earlier in the week during one of our three lunch periods. A small group of students became disruptive and began to throw food at other students. The situation was quickly contained, students finished their lunch, and returned to class.   As a result of what occurred in the cafeteria, this group of students will now have to follow a new, more restrictive lunch procedure.

The culture and climate at any school is largely determined by the attitudes and behaviors of the students who attend the school.  It is our responsibility as administrators, teachers, and support staff to model good behavior, implement safe practices, and, if needed, determine appropriate disciplinary actions. All of us at Smith are dedicated to these principles and work everyday to help our students understand their role in creating a safe learning environment for all Smith students.  Our staff uses the advisory time to build positive relationships with students and to implement restorative lessons pertaining to team building, anti-bullying, social media awareness, online bullying, vaping, and other lessons that are proactive in nature. We encourage our parents to be a part of this plan and look forward to continuing to build an open line of communications with our entire Smith community.

Have a safe and restful weekend,

Principal Jebril
