O.L. Smith Middle School

Letter from the Principal

As part of our ongoing effort to keep an open line of communication with our parents, I would like to take a moment to share information regarding a threatening comment brought to our attention.

After school yesterday, a student shared with us that another student had made a threatening comment.  We contacted our School Resource Officer and began an investigation into the credibility of the threat. We were able to identify the student who made the comment and with the help of the Dearborn Police Department have determined that at no time were any students in danger.

As a school, when we become aware of any type of threatening comment we must act swiftly to investigate. If students are involved in making false or threatening comments the discipline can be severe. Please use this information as an opportunity to talk with your children about the importance of thinking before speaking or making comments to other students in school or in the community because words can sometimes come with severe consequences. I am attaching the letter from Prosecutor Worthy on this issue. Please share this information with your child.

I would like to thank the student who brought this to our attention. I would also like to thank our SRO and the Dearborn Police for their quick response in helping to resolve this concern in such a short time.

Everyday, all of us at Smith work to maintain a safe school environment for all students. By always working together, and communicating, O.L.Smith will continue to be a great school and a safe place for your child.

Your partner in education,

Principal Jebril
