WIDA Testing Begins Tomorrow

Greetings Vikings!

The WIDA testing window will start January 27, 2021.  If your child is recognized as an (English Language Learner) EL, they are pre-identified by the state and are required to participate in the state English language proficiency assessment. The goal is to provide effective language development instruction for all students to become fully proficient in the English language and have language sufficient to meet the challenging common core standards that all students are expected to meet. Testing helps teachers identify your childś needs and understand how to help them reach their potential growth. Test scores also allow teachers to track your child’s progress and highlight areas of concern in writing, reading, listening and speaking.  In order for your student to exit the program they must receive a 4.8 composite score.  We encourage parents to discuss with their child the importance of performing to the best of their ability.

This state mandated assessment can only be given in person. Our school’s ELD specialist, Mrs. Hammoud, began arranging appointments this week. Testing sessions will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am-1pm. Transportation will be provided by parents.

All Covid-19 regulations will be taken into consideration during testing. Testing sessions are limited to 8 students per session, to ensure safe and social distant regulations. Students will need a mask, a snack, and a water bottle. A sanitized chrome book will be designated for testing. If students cannot complete the assessment in 1 day, they will be asked to return for a make up session.

Students who are eligible for testing will be marked ‘school related’. Teachers are notified of the students testing and they will be accommodating with their class work.

If you have any questions regarding this test or safety regulations, please contact Ms. Hammoud at hammoue@dearbornschools.org.

Your continued support during this challenging time is greatly appreciated.
