6th and 7th Graders Advanced Math Potential for Next Year

Please see the exciting news from your VIKING Math Department:

To 6th Grade Students and Parent(s)/ Guardian(s):

As we are in the midst of our testing season  we want to encourage your child to perform his/her best.  As you may already know we are extremely fortunate in our district to provide an education that focuses on learning for all. At the end of 6th grade, we believe there is a natural progression for students to enter either 7th-grade Math or advanced 7th-grade Math (Pre-algebra). In order for students to be placed into the advanced 7th-grade Math course students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Spring iReady Diagnostic score of at least

 520 (78th percentile)

  1.  Earn a grade of B or higher in  Semester 1 and Semester 2 final grade
  2. Teacher recommendation for advanced math placement
  3. Algebra Readiness Assessment score of at least  23 out of 30

If your child meets these requirements, you will receive a letter inviting your child into the course.  Please let us know if you have any questions regarding advanced math criteria and placement.

As we are in the midst of our testing season  we want to encourage your child to perform his/her best.  As you may already know we are extremely fortunate in our district to provide an education that focuses on learning for all. At the end of 7th grade, students naturally progress to 8th-grade Math unless they are able to demonstrate a deep understanding of advanced 7th-grade Math curriculum and meet the below criteria.   Both 8th grade Math and Algebra (advanced 8th-grade Math)  allow students to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school and build a strong foundation for future success in math courses at the collegiate level.  For a student to be placed into Algebra for their 8th grade Math course they must meet the following criteria:

  1. Spring iReady Diagnostic score of at least 531 (78th percentile)
  2.  Earn a grade of B or higher in  Semester 1 and Semester 2 final grade
  3. Teacher recommendation for advanced math placement
  4. Algebra Readiness Assessment score of at least  23 out of 30

If your child meets these requirements, you will receive a letter inviting your child into the course.  Please let us know if you have any questions regarding advanced math criteria and placement.
