Safety at Smith During Election Day
Greetings Families,
Tomorrow is a big day for our state/nation! We are proud to host the primary election at Smith. With that comes the concern that our school is open while school is in session.
At Smith, we have been proactive and I have met with my team to ensure student safety. Some of the precautions that we have in place are the following:
- hiring of two noon hour supervisors for the duration of the day to help us in monitoring voters as they come in and out of the atrium. Each of the two will be stationed on a different end of the atrium to guide voters in and out of the building. They will be trained in directing traffic in the building and will alert admin or our resource officer if anyone doesn’t comply.
- Officer Leto, our School Resource Officer, will remain on site for the duration of the school day
- We have dividers that will have signs on them limiting building access to the atrium
- Bathrooms will not be available or open for public use
- I have 5-7 staff members along with Mr. Rummel, Officer Leto and myself who will have an active presence in the atrium throughout the day – especially during transition time
- Many teachers will assist with their presence and crowd control during transition times and preps
I hope this helps alleviate/address some concerns that may be lingering. If you have any concerns or questions that have not been answered in any of my communication around this issue, please feel free to call or email me.
