Learning Labs to Support our Students
Dear Families, September 12, 2020
On August 10, 2020 the Dearborn Board of Education unanimously voted on a plan for our schools this Fall. After careful consideration the school board decided on remote learning with in-person learning labs through at least October 1, 2020. The school board along with district administration, teachers and community members carefully deliberated all options before deciding on a plan.
As previously mentioned, part of our remote learning plan will include learning labs. This is not available to students who opted-in to the Virtual Learning Program.
Learning labs will be in-person at your child’s school where your student(s) will be allowed to attend on a scheduled basis to receive academic assistance and/or social emotional support. A staff member is present with your child at all times. The number of students in a classroom is limited to 8 or lower depending on classroom size.
The purpose of the learning lab will be to support their remote instruction not replace it. Our goal is to begin learning labs the week of September 21 pending the current assessment of the CDC guidelines, recommendations from health professionals and guidance of the governor’s Safe Schools Road map. It is possible your child can attend a learning lab 2-5 days a week for anywhere from 1-4 hours a day. This will depend on the need and will vary for each student.
For learning labs the following measures have been taken to ensure the safety and health of students and staff:
- possibility of staggered starts to limit class sizes
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff and students
- High touch point areas will be cleaned and sanitized between learning groups
In the coming weeks your child’s teacher will communicate specifically the time and days the learning lab will be available for your child. Transportation will be provided via shuttle service if your child received bus services prior to the March shutdown.
I would like to thank all of you for your patience as we navigate through these challenging times. We will continue to evaluate all situations. We assure you that the health and safety of your child is our utmost priority. If you have any questions please contact your child’s Principal.
Thank you,
Dr. Glenn Maleyko
