The Dearborn Public Library hosts an all ages “Read Woke Challenge”

Events encourages reading about other cultures, groups

Dearborn Public Library is holding a Read Woke Challenge from January 11 to February 20.  The event encourages everyone to read “woke” books and discuss the topics in the books.  “Woke” books are titles that focus on people from underrepresented groups or that challenge stereotypes or social norms.  The library has possible book titles on its website.

To complete the challenge, anyone can read two woke books and log them through the library’s reading tracker.  Students who finish the challenge earn a free book and a chance to win gift cards to local businesses. See the flyer.

Book discussions and other events are also planned related to the challenge.

If you need more book ideas for students at any level, consider checking out the MAME MiSelf 2020 book list.  The Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) members creating the book list include the district’s own Cynthia Alvarado.  The list includes diverse books published in the last two years that students seem to enjoy borrowing and reading from their school libraries.
