Parents: We are Partnering with Wayne State University to Pioneer Mindfulness and Movement Lessons

Greetings Viking Parents and Guardians,

Starting in a few weeks, we’re going to be partnering with WSU and bringing an innovative intervention to our school called “Teens Work It Out (TWIO).”  It’s a daily intervention that we will use a little bit of time in Advisory period to start each day with some mindful breathing/relaxation, movement, and thinking exercises so that our students can hopefully be emotionally and academically ready to start the day.  We are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic on our students. This intervention is also intended to help them learn ways to self-regulate, feel more confidence, and solve their problems in ways that we believe will be helpful in navigating a variety of situations that they may find frustrating or stressful.  We think it’s going to be great for them and we are excited to give it a try.  There is a research component to it so that the WSU folks can help us determine scientifically if it really helps or not, and in what areas (e.g., academic performance, behavior, self-esteem, feelings about teachers and school, friendships, confidence, and more).

There is also a home component that we will share with you each week so you can follow along with what they are learning and you are welcome to try the exercises and techniques yourself or with others in your family. Please see the attached Parent Research Information Sheet and contact me by Tuesday 11/21/2023 date if you have any questions about it.  We look forward to our students trying this new opportunity to add some new skills to their skillsets!

Please review the documents below. The skills students receive from these mini-lessons will give them valuable tools for success in school and life, and we are excited to have been chosen to take part!
