Dear families,
As many of you may know, O.L. Smith is home to FOUR ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) Center Based Classrooms and one EI (Emotionally Impaired) Classroom. Students in the ASD classrooms range from mild to severe. ASD teachers are certified in that specific area and do an outstanding job meeting the needs of their students. They have small class sizes and have trained paraprofessionals that work with them.
In an attempt to embrace all learners in our learning community, our staff received professional development on Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Teachers and other staff members present were given an overview, sensitivity and awareness training to help them better understand the disorder. Staff was also trained in what to do in situations where one of our ASD students might be having a meltdown in the hallway or other common areas. They were also provided with strategies that are particularly effective with ASD students for those who have ASD students in their classrooms.
Several of our ASD and EI students are in general education classes for one or more hours throughout the day and the staff felt it imperative to educate students on how to interact with and help their classmates. Behavior Specialist-Kim Zarzycki-will be pushing into classrooms to educate our students so all students are able to successfully work together. Our goal is to bring awareness, establish compassion and a sense of community for all.
In addition, we have started a “Peer to Peer” Leadership Class in which general education students push into the ASD classrooms as peer leaders. Students are trained on how to assist and work with their ASD peers under the guidance and supervision of the teacher. We have recently implemented this but already see the benefits for ALL. Students in this program have developed more compassion and are portraying more leadership qualities as their ASD peers communicate and socialize more while receiving academic assistance. It’s a win-win for all students.
Our goal at O.L.Smith is to embrace everyone in our learning community and we continue to strive to meet the needs of ALL students.
Thank you for your partnership and support!
